Materials Shake

Cedar shakes and cedar shingles have been the predominate roofing material in the Northwest and Seattle region for several decades. These two types of cedar products are the most common, they present a similar look but are completely different types of materials. Both are cut from Western Red Cedar trees, but cedar shingles are sawn on both sides and thinner at the butt than cedar shakes.

Cedar shakes are the most common in the Seattle area and surrounding region, they are hand split and come in 2 main styles: Medium and Heavy grade. The medium grade measure nominal 1/2" at the butt, while the Heavy grade measures nominal 3/4" at the butt. There is also a Jumbo grade that is nominal 1" at the butt.

Cedar shake has been very popular in and around Seattle due to it's elegant beauty and natural weather defying properties. There has been a sharp rise in the cost of cedar shake roofs which has contributed to many Seattle homeowners looking for an alternative roofing product. There will always be a place for cedar shake roofs, especially for those that appreciate their beauty and splendor.
